Book Reviews

Jay Glerum has recently released the third edition of his seminal Stage Rigging Handbook and once again every technical director, stage hand and facility manager in the entertainment industry should be thankful. … This third edition moves beyond the basic descriptions and simple math of the earlier ones to include system maintenance, fire curtain details and even greater attention to safety.

. . . [Stage Rigging Handbook] is a great book for anyone who teaches technical theatre, specifies systems, or gives advice on theatre rigging systems, operates a rigging system, or is responsible for a rigging system. If you do not do these things but are a theatrical dealer, this is a good book to recommend to your customers.

Jay O. Glerum makes my jobs-as both the Technology Committee Chairman and Safety Committee Co-Chairman for Local One of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E.)-easier. If you are not familiar with I.A.T.S.E., we build the shows, hang the shows and maintain the shows. As Chairman of Local One's Technology Committee, it is my job to keep the 3,000 members not only safe but trained in all the skills a stagehand needs in order to perform his/her job.

Jay Glerum helps us by providing books written in a manner that is comprehensible in stagehand terms, as well as terms that the general managers of the large theatres we work in can understand. One of the things I like about [his] books is that when I am discussing safety issues with management personnel who do not have the same skills as the people working for them, I can show them in print in the book so that they can understand our safety concerns.

. . . I would strongly suggest this book to all students of theatre, all stagehands of I.A.T.S.E., as well as to all members of ESTA. My appreciation and thanks go out to Jay for writing such useful material. John M. Diaz
